The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game in which players place bets into a pot, and then try to make the best five-card hand possible. The game has many different variations, but all of them share the same basic rules. The game is played in homes, clubs, and casinos. It has become so popular that it is often considered to be the national card game of the United States. Its play and jargon have permeated American culture.
The first round of betting begins after everyone has received their two hole cards. This is prompted by 2 mandatory bets called blinds put into the pot by the two players to the left of the dealer. These bets are meant to provide an incentive (a pot to win) for people to play.
A fourth community card is dealt face up. This is known as the flop. A second round of betting begins, and this time it is the turn to raise bets.
Depending on the poker variant being played, one player is designated to place the first bet. Each player in turn must then either call the bet, raise it or fold. If a player chooses to raise the bet, then he must increase his own stake in the pot by at least 29 less than the amount raised by the last raiser (the player who is said to be in the pot). This process is known as matching.
